My first experience of safari was with my father, who was an eye doctor, and took eye care deep into masailand in the 1960s. We used to travel by landrover, and I can remember the fun of sitting in the spare wheel on the bonnet whilst my father drove.
We camped near small villages, and people with eye problems would form long lines to see the doctor. Kenya was teeming with wildlife in those days.
My brother and I would sleep in our own tent, but at the first night noises, we would scamper into the larger tent and spend the rest of the night with our parents.
In the 70s I got the travel bug and drove a VolksWagen beetle from Nairobi to London which involved a lot of pushing to get the little car through the sand of the Sahara desert, but I learned to love the wild scenery and came back to Kenya via Egypt and Sudan, before getting involved in the tour business in the late 70s.
I have led numerous safaris in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. However, I have a great passion for the mountains in North Kenya and just being in the African wilderness, particularly enjoying the night sounds.
My favourite view in east Africa? From the western edge of Mt Ngiro overlooking the Saguta Valley and the southern end of Lake Turkana!
Having had the privilege of accompanying John on several enjoyable and memorable adventures such as camel walking, white water rafting, canoeing, and mountain trekking amongst other adventures throughout East Africa from an early age.
