Q:Are snakes a problem on safari?
A:We hardly ever see them even though there are plenty in East Africa. They normally hear us and hide or move away
Q:When walking do we meet other groups?
A:Very rarely do we meet other tour groups - except in the national parks while game driving.
Q:Do clients have to help in setting up camp?
A:No; our crew does all the camp set up.
Q:Is it dangerous to walk in the African bush?
A:This is the main reason you should book a walking safari run by an experienced guides; through Wildhorizon Safaris. It is on my experienced judgement where to walk and how close to get to animals. The primary goal of the guide is to ensure the safety of his or her clients and under all circumstances any lawful instructions issued by your guide must be strictly applied
Q:North Kenya is reputedly a dangerous place with lots of people carrying guns?
A:Of course there have been some isolated incidences of robbery; involving even tourists over the years but we take the extra precaution of travelling with 2 armed personnel. Likewise, when walking it is highly unlikely that we become a target as we are in amongst the local communities. Typically most incidences are targeted at motorists.
Q:How long is a normal days walk?
A:Most days are fairly easy and we can pace ourselves according to the clients' wishes. However some places have to be covered in the designated time as no pick up point (by our back-up vehicle) is possible. For example the east of Bogoria is one and takes about 6-7 hours walking to cover. The Jade Sea Journey is not the faint-hearted as walks typically range between 8 - 12 hours sometimes
Q:What happens when a client falls ill?
A:I carry a satellite phone to make contact but in very remote areas however in Suguta valley and South Turkana it can be difficult to get help midway. However, we highly recommend that clients acquire the flying doctors membership evacuation cover (USD 25 per person valid within a 500km radius of Nairobi).
Q:What kind of food does Wildhorizons Safaris provide?
A:We provide mostly fresh food (vegetables and meat) but obviously in some remote areas we rely on tinned and dried food but always ensure that meals are tasty and nutritious. We can cater for vegetarians as well.
Q:What if clients don't want to walk but just enjoy a classic African safari?
A:We organize all types of safaris; even lodge based trips but always on a personalized basis. However, we do not operate budget safaris.
